Worthing Citizens Advice Bureau
Like most CABs we never seem to have enough volunteer advisers and other helpers to meet the needs of an ever more complex society. In Worthing we deal with around 10,000 problems every year. Here are a few facts about the requirements and training needed to join us in this much needed work.
Recruitment
If you are thinking of becoming an Adviser, we would be delighted to welcome you onto our training programme. We offer a structured and recognised training programme over a period of 2 years.
We hold recruitment evenings twice a year where individuals get a chance to find out more about us and how we work. If you miss one of those, you are welcome to ring Toni Lamb on 01903 532662, who will be happy to go through our training programme with you and answer any questions.
What’s in it for you?
Well you have the opportunity to achieve a qualification equivalent to an NVQ level 3 in Advising. If you are community spirited, you are also able to ‘give something back’ to the community in which you live. You learn a lot about systems and procedures that surround us all and will touch upon our lives or lives of others from Housing, Debt, Benefits, Tax, and Employment issues. There is the opportunity become involved in an established organisation, with great people to work with and a good social scene. You will be constantly stimulated both through learning and through practical queries from the clients. So if you have Sherlock Homes tendencies you would fit in well.
Times
Our opening times are Monday to Thursday, and advisers are asked to complete one full day or two half days in any week. We see clients from 10am to 4pm and advisers normally come in slightly earlier to update themselves, enjoy a cup of tea and a chat and finish around 1pm or 4 pm depending on whether they re doing a half or full day session.
Training
The first 6 months of training takes place at the Bureau. It is again either 2 half days or 1 full day. After that training will take place either in Brighton, Billingshurst or Haywards Heath dependent on courses and availability.
Objectives
The objectives that we have to meet are to make each individual sufficiently confident across a wide range of subjects including Immigration, Housing, Homelessness, Debt, Benefits, Consumer, Domestic and Employment Law, to be able to advise the client. We have an up to date and accurate database from which we download information according to the issues raised and therefore a good degree of competence is required in using a computer – Word, Email and Internet specifically.
Comments
All this may seem overly complicated! To make it easier, call us to find out more and get a better perspective of the way we work and where we work.
If you need to be mentally stimulated and have good literacy, numeracy and IT skills, we would love to hear from you now.
